New rules for Copper River dipnetting season protect sensitive sites

June 5, 2024

The article “New rules for Copper River dipnetting season” discusses the recent efforts to protect cultural sites within the right-of-way between Chitina and Hailey Creek along the Copper River. Following the discovery of significant cultural sites in the area, the Native Village of Chitina and Ahtna, Inc. collaborated with the state to ensure the dipnet and subsistence fisheries could continue without impacting these sites.

A plan was devised and implemented that included constructing “bridges” over sensitive areas to prevent ground disturbance and setting up barriers around other vulnerable spots. This setup aims to minimize impacts while further investigative studies are conducted.

Additionally, signs have been installed to enforce respectful behavior and adherence to specific rules to protect the cultural heritage of the area. The state has expressed gratitude to the Native Village of Chitina and Ahtna, Inc. for their cooperation and is committed to maintaining these protective measures throughout the fishing season.
